Super Bowl XLIV: New York Giants vs. Houston Texans
![]()
Ok, so the Super Bowl is a very long ways away, but I felt like going out on a limb. So, after a year of absence, the New York Giants will make it to Super Bowl XLIV. They adjust to life without Plaxico with Hakeem Nicks making it an easy transition. Meanwhile, the Giants defense is even better this year with additions Chris Canty, Rocky Bernard, and Michael Boley. It is early, but the 2009 draft seemed to be quite exceptional for the Giants. They picked up many impressive players with big upside. These players include WR Hakeem Nicks, OLB Clint Sintim, OT Will Beatty, 6’6” WR Ramses Barden, RB Andre Brown (to fill the loss of Derrick Ward), and QB Rhett Bomar. With a punishing run game and a juggernaut defense the Giants will be the team to beat in the NFC. In the AFC, I went with a surprise team. It seems more often than not a team comes out of nowhere to make it to the super bowl. This year I think that team will be the Houston Texans. With a weak schedule the Texans must focus on beating their division rivals: the Colts and the Titans. Without Haynesworth (or a solid QB) the Titans may not fare as well this year, while the Colts may not be able to keep up with the youthful Texans. Houston has a high-octane offense with a healthy Matt Schaub at QB. He can throw it to NFL elite Andre Johnson, underrated deep threat Kevin Walter, red zone threat Owen Daniels, or safety valve HB Steve Slaton. Slaton had a great season last year and his backup, Ryan Moats, is a small, shifty back, similar to San Diego’s Darren Sproles. Their defense is young and menacing, featuring DeMeco Ryans, Mario Williams, Amobi Okoye, and Dunta Robinson. Add 2009 draft picks Brian Cushing, Connor Barwin, and Glover Quin, along with the signing of veteran Cato June and you have a fierce, deep, and youthful defense. They went 8-8 last year with Schaub often injured and went 5-1 in their last six games. Make no mistake Houston is on the rise and if they can stay healthy they will be a force to be reckoned with. So there it is, the Giants vs. the Texans in Miami for Super Bowl XLIV. You heard it here first.
